A little bit about Geography...
Geography is the study of all of the people, places, and cultures on Earth. This year, we will spend time studying the various continents. As we study each continent, we will focus on that continent's history, culture, religion, language, landforms, and how it relates to the modern world.
Geography can be made up of random facts that are hard for students to connect. I hope that by the end of the course, students will see how unique and sepcial the world is as a creation of God. I want them to develop a deep compassion for all of the people and cultures that God has made. I will be seeking to help them make the connections between the facts and the reality that all people are made in God's image and for a purpose!
Some of my overarching goals for this year are as follows:
I want students to see that...
1. God is the Creator of all things.
2. God continues to sustain all things.
3. God reveals Himself through creation
4. Creation has been damaged by sin and is now subjected to the process of decay.
5. Creation brings praise to God.
6. Mankind is to rule over the Earth.
7. Creation is orderly, has a purpose, and is intelligible.
8. Creation functions in predictable ways, but God intervenes as He chooses in unpredictable ways.
What to expect in my classroom...
I teach Geography in units. Each unit is made up of three chapters- one on the physical geography of a place, the second on the history and culture of a place, and the last on what the place is like today. I have one major assessment per unit. Students can expect to have several homework assignments per week. I try to give students time in class to begin their homework and ask questions. It is important that the students use their textbook as a guide when completing homework.
Part of Geography class is learning geography skills. Students will learn life skills such as how to read a map, how to tell directions, how to use longitude and latitude, etc. They will have separate assessments on their knowledge of Geography skills.
How I Grade...
Minor Assessments- 40%
Major Assessments- 60%
